This is a two day project for K-1. We first used found objects to stamp our cherry blossom trees. We used cardboard to create straight lines and rolled up scraps of bulletin board boarder to create the blossoms.
On day two students will use oil pastels to create more variety and texture in their flowers. Two strips of red construction paper will be pasted on the top and bottom of their artwork, and a small piece of string will be attached to the top to complete the scroll.
Fabulous interpretation on cherry blossoms... I love them..
ReplyDeleteThese are fabulous! I'm doing a unit on Japan, too, so I started this lesson with kindergarten today. Used the "y" and "v" branch explanation, but so many of the kids' trees turned out like criss crossed, messy craziness!! Not at all like branches. How did you get your kids' work to look so nice?

I have k-1 together so the 1st graders help guide at their tables, but this project was definitely more challenging for the k's. If its just K I would say create each branch together step by step. Start with the "y" at the bottom and then grow "v's" off the tops of the "y". if you have a doc cam this could work pretty slick. if not do a large version on a paper easel board (with a big hunk of cardboard) and work along with them. Same with blossoms. (and believe me there were a couple crazy messes in my room as well!) good luck, hope that helps!
